Child Visa – Subclass 101

If you have a dependent child overseas and want them to live with you in Australia permanently, the Child Visa (Subclass 101) may be an option. This visa allows an eligible child outside Australia to move to Australia and live with their parent who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or an eligible New Zealand citizen.

What Subclass 101 Offers

Once granted, the child can live in Australia permanently and may be eligible to enrol in Australia’s public healthcare scheme (Medicare). In some cases, the child may also be able to sponsor eligible relatives, subject to visa rules and eligibility.

Important Note (Adopted Children)
  • If applying for an adopted child, the child must generally be adopted before turning 18
  • The adoption must be by a parent who was not an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen at the time of adoption
Travel Facility: The child can travel to and from Australia for up to 5 years after the visa is granted.
Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Child Visa (Subclass 101), the child must generally:

  • Be the dependent child of a parent who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen
  • Be either:
    • Under 18 years of age, or
    • Aged 18 to under 25, a full-time student and financially dependent on the parent, or
    • Over 18 and unable to work due to a disability
  • Be single and dependent on the parent
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Be outside Australia at the time of application

Estimated Processing Time: Approximately 17 to 29 months (may vary).
